Citizenship Affected People’s Network – Nepal

Citizenship Affected People’s Network (CAPN) is a national civil society organization dedicated to advocating for gender equal nationality laws in Nepal. Nepal has been grappling with gender-discriminatory citizenship, making it one of the 24 countries globally that do not ensure equal citizenship rights for women on par with men.
Despite current constitutional provisions recognizing women’s right to confer citizenship to their children and their fundamental right to descent, contradictory clauses in the citizenship chapter impose multiple conditions and barriers for women. This clearly shows that women are not yet considered equal citizens in Nepal.

CAPN’s vision is to transform and abolish gender discriminatory citizenship laws, practices and narratives in Nepal by establishing it as a fundamental human rights issue. We are committed to enhancing our capacity and advocating for legal reform and transformative societal change, establishing gender-equal citizenship as a human rights issue nationally and mainstreaming it internationally. Our initiatives are led by affected individuals in the center and supported by allies, we have been working for legal, policy, and administrative reforms. CAPN ensures social awareness about gender-equal citizenship laws through various workshops and outreach programs, highlighting its impact and fostering a supportive community that promotes solidarity, dignity, and support for stateless and affected individuals.
