Protecting the rights of stateless persons
Stateless individuals face numerous barriers to accessing their fundamental rights, often leading to a life marked by social exclusion, insecurity, and marginalization. Stateless persons frequently encounter difficulties in obtaining basic services such as education, healthcare, and social security, which are essential for a dignified life. Additionally, without legal recognition, stateless people are vulnerable to various forms of exploitation, including trafficking, arbitrary detention, and forced eviction. These challenges are exacerbated by the constant threat of deportation or expulsion, as their lack of nationality often leaves them with limited legal protection. The Thematic Working Group (TWG) on Protecting the Rights of Stateless Persons is dedicated to addressing these urgent issues by advocating for the rights of stateless persons to be fully upheld, regardless of their immigration status.
Ensuring that stateless persons can access their rights is not only a matter of individual dignity but is also essential for achieving broader societal goals. Stateless individuals are frequently excluded from national development initiatives, creating a ripple effect that impacts families, communities, and states. By ensuring that stateless people are included in national systems and can contribute economically and socially, countries can foster more cohesive and resilient societies.
The TWG will work to promote alignment of national laws with the 1954 Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and other relevant international standards, aiming to secure rights such as access to education, healthcare, employment, and identity documentation for stateless individuals. The TWG will seek to facilitate partnerships with development actors, UN agencies, and civil society to support state efforts to include stateless persons in development planning and service delivery. By collaborating with stateless-led organizations, the TWG will raise awareness among affected individuals about their rights and available services, and advocate for inclusive policies that ensure no one is left behind.
Alliance members interested in advancing the rights and protection of stateless persons are encouraged to complete the online form below to join this TWG, where they can contribute to building an inclusive world where everyone enjoys equal rights.
