Alliance of Iraqi Minorities Network
The Alliance of Iraqi Minorities Network (AIM) is a non-profit, non-governmental network established in November 2010, comprising 28 local organizations across Iraq. AIM’s mission is to advocate for the rights of Iraqi minorities, safeguard their identity, promote equality, and foster their active participation in Iraq’s socio-political and cultural landscapes.
AIM represents 14 distinct ethno-religious minority groups, including Yazidis, Shabak, Faili Kurds, Baha’is, Christians, and Roma (Kawliya), who face unique challenges, including statelessness, marginalization, and barriers to accessing civil documentation. Statelessness remains a pressing issue, particularly for groups such as the Faili Kurds and Baha’is, whose legal identities have historically been neglected or denied, leaving them excluded from fundamental rights and services.
AIM addresses these challenges through:
• Advocacy and Legal Assistance: Campaigning for legal reforms to facilitate access to nationality and civil documentation for stateless individuals and providing direct legal support to affected communities.
• Capacity Building and Awareness: Conducting training, workshops, and campaigns to promote understanding of minority rights and the impact of statelessness on marginalized groups.
• Research and Policy Influence: Preparing evidence-based reports, including contributions to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), and working with governmental and international stakeholders to ensure sustainable solutions.
• Livelihood and Peacebuilding Initiatives: Promoting coexistence and fostering social cohesion among Iraq’s diverse communities.
AIM operates in regions with significant minority populations, including Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, Halabja, Nineveh, Kirkuk, Baghdad, Al-Wasit, Misan, and Basra. Through collaborations with over 30 partners, including UN agencies, international organizations, and Iraqi government bodies, AIM works to amplify the voices of minorities and advocate for their rights at local, national, and international levels.
