Organization of American States (OAS)
Addressing statelessness is a key component of the human rights agenda of the Organization of American States (OAS). The OAS is committed to joining collective efforts that respect domestic laws and international legal standards to protect the rights of those affected by statelessness. This commitment was reaffirmed by Member States at the most recent UN General Assembly, where they pledged to work towards eradicating and preventing statelessness and advancing strategies and initiatives to achieve these goals.
Several States in the Americas have taken significant steps, including undertaking legal reforms, ratifying international conventions on statelessness, and providing durable solutions to ensure individuals have a recognized nationality and the rights that come with it. Additionally, States have been supporting the Cartagena +40 Process, led by Chile, to incorporate actions aimed at eradicating statelessness into future plans of action.
The OAS General Secretariat is pleased to join the Global Alliance to End Statelessness and its Solution Seeker programme. This collaboration is expected to bring new opportunities and strategies to further advance the statelessness agenda in the region, supporting the collective goal of ensuring that every individual has a recognized nationality and the rights that come with it.
