Stateless Network

Hajime Akiyama

As an organisation that works specifically on issues of statelessness, we are eager to join the Global Alliance to End Statelessness. We recognise that human rights are a fundamental universal value, and that the rights of stateless persons are particularly vulnerable to violation. For this reason, we are committed to supporting and protecting stateless individuals. At the same time, our mission is not limited to “ending” statelessness. We believe that human rights must be protected regardless of nationality, and that a world should be possible in which a person’s rights are fully respected even if they are stateless. From this perspective, we are not fully convinced that statelessness itself must always be eliminated. Some people may choose not to hold a nationality for historical, political, or identity‑related reasons, and we do not believe that they should be compelled to obtain one. Nevertheless, we recognise that efforts to end statelessness play an important role in highlighting the human rights challenges faced by stateless persons and in promoting necessary policy and social change. In this spirit, Stateless Network wishes to join the Alliance to demonstrate our commitment to the protection and promotion of the human rights of stateless persons.
